A flame or any luminous body will appear more brilliant in proportion to the deeper shadows which surround it. Shadow is greater than light. Shadow can deprive objects of light, but light can never entirely banish shadow. Between light and darkness lie the beginning and ends of shadow. It is the means by which objects display their form and the more brilliant the light given by a luminous body the deeper will be the shadows cast by the object it illuminates.
